I actually enjoyed the gameplay for the most part. The few things that bothered me were related to forcing you to stay within a certain range of the playfield or being killed by the game. When I'm in a helicopter, I want to fly high and rain missile-y death on foes below, while their AA can't hit me.
The game sort of balked on that.
But they made up for it with lots of controllable vehicles. :)
